We are a group who jointly own some of the larger garden implements, which are
only used perhaps once or twice a year, and take up a lot of space meanwhile.
We have a shredder, lawn scarifier, lawn vacuum and hedge-trimmers.
There is a joining fee of £10 to buy into the equipment (it does need replacing from time to time) and £2 per year subscription thereafter. There is a modest hire charge for half a day or a day's use; the shredder being most expensive at £3 for a half day.
There is another benefit from joining the gardening section - we order seeds at a discount early in the year. If you have an allotment or vegetable plot in the garden, you are likely to gain more in discount than your gardening section subscription.
We sent in a petition to Sheffield City Council regarding the apparent increase in weedkiller used in the area. Their reply was to plead poverty and continue to spray, because of the labout costs of weeding and edging. Anyone out there looking for suitable tasks for offenders?
