President

At the latest meeting of the Executive Council on Thursday 9th December, it was unanimously resolved that Graham Blincow be elected as President of the Association. Graham said that he felt greatly honoured to be appointed to the post, made vacant by the sad passing of John Longmire. He will continue to serve as a member of the Executive Council, and as before work for the benefit of the local community in every way possible.

John Longmire

It is with great regret that we report the passing of our President, John B. Longmire. Most of us on the Executive council cannot remember a time when John has not been around, and we all remember his sterling work for the Association. He worked tirelessly for the Association for many years, and at various times he has been Bar Steward (along with his ever faithful assistant Joan), Membership Secretary (for that many years that no one can remember how long!) and Chairman of the Association for many years. On his resignation as Chairman he was elected as the first Honorary President of the Association - a post of which he was very proud and which he richly deserved.

He will be greatly missed by us all.

Would you like to be a Computer Buddy ?

Hello
I'd like to recruit some volunteers with a basic understanding of computer skills who work with in the community and are passionate about helping people. Would this interest you or some of your colleagues?

We will train the volunteers how to teach people computer skills, it's all very informal and a lot of it will be peer to peer learning and sharing.

We'd like to deliver this service to the many vulnerable and elderly people who for reasons of fear, frustration and lack of knowledge are unable to use their computers.

The volunteers will then help people they know or meet in their daily lives, and in this way act as "Community Computer Buddies".

Our aim is to help the people who our Community Computer Buddies know; their friends and neighbours, to get online and stay online.

Together we can make a huge difference and open up a new world of communication, interest and enjoyment to people who would otherwise remain lonely and isolated.

If you go to community groups or work within the community, it would be a great place to start!
If you have any ideas or are interested, please get in contact with me.

Here is a little more about the campaign...
Community Computer Buddies is a new scheme aimed at helping people not only to get online but to stay online on their own. It has special emphasis for the elderly and vulnerable. We are setting up a network of volunteers in villages, towns and cities across Yorkshire willing to give help and advice to friends and neighbours. Contacts with groups and clubs are especially helpful.

Computers and the language associated with them can make even the most intellectual people feel ignorant and stupid. Tiny problems can seem insurmountable especially when you don’t have anyone to turn to for help. If a Community Computer Buddy were available to say ‘Oh that happened to me and what I did was …..’ it will empower the learner, make them feel better and prepare them to resolve the problem. With your help people’s lives may be transformed.

We're wanting people to spread the word that they're happy to help friends should they get stuck. We may well find more people prepared to become ‘buddies’ and join our team. It is all very informal. We need to explain we are not teachers or experts and we may not know the answers, but if we can help we will.

We want to offer advice at clubs and groups which our computer buddies attend. One of our ‘Buddies’ where the scheme has started in Cornwall has offered to sit for an hour each week in his local shop and offer assistance. If the ‘drop in’ advice session appeals to you perhaps you could do the same at coffee mornings or lunch groups in your village? It is entirely up to you how you would like to make the system work.

In order to achieve success we have some basic rules which we must follow. We may not go into people’s homes unless we know them well. Your safety is most important.

We may not accept payment for our help as this is voluntary, community work.
We will also encourage learners to call the BBC First Click number on 08000 150 950 to find out what courses are available in their area.

As this is a pilot project it’s really important we celebrate our achievements. If it is successful it may well be rolled out across the country.

Crimicar Lane Cricket Ground Project

Hallam Cricket Club has signed a 30 year lease with landowners Birkdale School for the Crimicar Lane site. The main features of the project will comprise

- a new cicket pitch
- off-road parking
- additional fencing and other boundary treatments
- refurbishment of the changing rooms building.

It is also envisaged that parts of the ground will be used for junior football in the winter months.

Hallam Cricket Club is always keen to attract new members and supporters. For further information please contact the Club Secretary, Richard Storer, at storers@moorcroftclose.f9.co.uk

Note from HCYA - All members of our community must be delighted that Hallam Cricket Club is preserving the open space aspect of the area (instead of houses being built on it !!!!). We are sure that everyone will respect their wishes regarding privacy and dogs, and understand the reason why.

It is intended that this page will read like a local newspaper or magazine, providing local information, news and gossip.   We are presently recruiting contributors on a variety of subjects, and we would be very grateful for anyone who feels they would like to take part.   You would be required to provide a short piece on your chosen subject (e.g. this month's garden, the countryside just now, local council news, a short story, local football results, etc., etc.)   and forward it to a particular person each month (initially this might be every three months until we recruit enough helpers).   If you would like to be involved in any way, please contact Graham Blincow on 230 4108, or by e-mail on info@hcya.org.uk
